Camden Early College High School Community Update
We are thrilled to share the incredible success of our Student Government Association's (SGA) School Supply Drive, which has just concluded its second week. This drive aimed to support students in a small rural school in Colombia, and the response from our community has been nothing short of amazing.
Support for Escuela Fermín Emilio Montoya (FEM)
Earlier this year, our SGA initiated a campaign to collect school supplies for Escuela Fermín Emilio Montoya (FEM), located in the municipality of Guarne, Antioquia, Colombia. This school, which serves about 40 students from Pre-K to 5th grade with just two teachers (Mrs. Margarita and Mrs. Liliana), is a cornerstone of education in the area. However, limited resources have made it challenging for the teachers and students to acquire basic supplies. The municipality has just completed the renovation of the school's 3 classrooms of which one will be a multipurpose classroom to be used as a science lab, library, and reading space. As you will see in some of the pictures the classrooms will not come furnished with any chairs, desks, tables, rugs, chalk boards, and so on. So this up coming year we will look to have a fund raiser to see if we can help the school with some of these materials.
Our Community's Generosity
We called upon our students and their families to support this noble cause, and their generosity was overwhelming. Students who donated four items were credited with one hour of community service. In total, well over 400 items were collected, translating to more than 100 hours of community service awarded to our students. Camden County High School students also played a crucial role, with a special mention to Mrs. Broyles and her AP Spanish class for their leadership in this effort.
Supplies Collected
The variety of items collected was impressive, including:
- Notebooks
- Pencils
- Pens
- Spanish to English Dictionaries
- Sharpeners
- Erasers
- Markers
- Crayons
- Folders
- Art supplies
- Basic first aid supplies
Delivery and Appreciation
Last month, we successfully delivered these much-needed supplies to the teachers and students of Escuela Fermín Emilio Montoya. The gratitude from the school community was heartwarming. The children expressed their thanks by singing a song for us, creating a memorable and touching moment for everyone involved.
Thank You
We want to extend our deepest gratitude to all students, families, and staff members who contributed to this drive. Your support has made a significant impact on the lives of these children and their educational journey.
Here are a few pictures and links to a couple of short videos from our visit to the school, capturing the joy and appreciation of the students and teachers.
Thank you, Camden Early College High School community, for your kindness and generosity!
